Sword and sheathe

A few days ago, I heard something on the radio that made me think. Apparently, in Japan, there is the concept that a romantic relationship is like that between a sword and a sheathe. One party is aggressive and purposeful, driven; the other is accommodating and passive, abiding. And the idea is that the roles are fluid; the parties can change roles, i.e. the guy’s not necessarily the sword, not all the time.

I think that’s really an interesting concept…
